Ampharos is the final evolution of Mareep (メリープ), evolving from Flaaffy (モココ), and was introduced in Generation II. It is known for the bright, glowing orb on the tip of its tail, which shines so brightly it can be seen from space and has historically been used as a beacon or signal—an iconic example being the lighthouse Ampharos 'Amphy' in Olivine City in the Johto games.
デンリュウ (Denryū) is the Japanese name for Ampharos, the Pokémon species depicted on this card. The name combines 電流 (denryū, 'electric current') with 竜/龍 (ryū, 'dragon'), reflecting its Electric typing and its later dragon-like associations; the English name 'Ampharos' is thought to derive from 'amp' (ampere) and 'pharos' (lighthouse).
