Donphan is the Armor Pokémon and the evolved form of Phanpy, a Ground-type introduced in Generation II (Johto). It is a powerful elephant-like creature whose body is wrapped in tough, tire-like treads, allowing it to curl up and roll at great speed to attack or move. Its tremendous strength lets it knock down houses with a tackle, and it is also known to use that power constructively, helping clear rockslides and mudslides that block mountain trails.
The Japanese name ドンファン (Donfan) is generally understood to combine the onomatopoeic/intensifier 'don' (ドン), suggesting a heavy, booming impact, with the 'fan' element echoing 'elephant' (and possibly the term 'fang' or the legendary figure Don Juan, romanized in Japanese as ドンファン). The 'don' portion can also evoke a sense of largeness or forcefulness, fitting its tackling theme. The English name 'Donphan' retains the original Japanese reading almost directly, preserving 'Don' and adapting 'fan' to 'phan,' which also calls to mind 'elephant' and 'pachyderm.'
