“Phanpy uses its long nose to shower itself. When others gather around, they thoroughly douse each other with water. These Pokémon can be seen drying their soaking-wet bodies at the edge of water.”

Phanpy is a small, blue Ground-type baby Pokémon introduced in Generation II (Johto), known as the Long Nose Pokémon for its trunk-like nose. It uses this nose to spray water over itself for bathing and play, and groups of Phanpy can be seen dousing one another near the water's edge. Despite its small size it is surprisingly strong, and it evolves into the much larger Donphan, becoming a powerful Ground-type.
The Japanese name ゴマゾウ (Gomazou) combines 胡麻 (goma, 'sesame'), likely referencing the small speckled markings on its body, with ぞう/象 (zou, 'elephant'); the '-zou' suffix is also a common element in old-fashioned Japanese boys' names, giving it a cute, childlike feel. The English name 'Phanpy' blends 'elephant' (from the 'phant' sound) with 'pygmy' or simply a small, babyish '-py' ending, conveying a tiny baby elephant.
