Ho-Oh is a Legendary Pokemon introduced in Generation II (Gold/Silver) and serves as the mascot of Pokemon Gold; it is said to leave a rainbow trail and grant eternal happiness to those who see it. In the anime, a glimpse of Ho-Oh early on inspired Ash's journey, and it is closely tied to the legendary beasts Raikou, Entei, and Suicune, whom it is said to have revived at the Burned Tower in Ecruteak City.
ホウオウ (Hō-Ō) is the Japanese name for Ho-Oh, derived from the hōō (鳳凰), the Chinese/Japanese phoenix or fenghuang, a legendary firebird symbolizing good fortune. The repeated 'oh' in the English romanization preserves the original phoenix association.
