It dwells in volcanic environments, where the sulfur it consumes produces explosive compounds in the spiky, dome-like shell on its back. The horn-tipped protrusions and the explosive bulge on its shell make it dangerous to attack from behind, while it lacks an evolutionary line and stands alone as a single-stage species.

The Japanese name バクガメス (Bakugamesu) combines 爆 (baku, from bakuhatsu 爆発, meaning 'explosion') with カメ (kame, meaning 'turtle'); the trailing 'su' may evoke a hard or hissing finish to the name. The English name 'Turtonator' blends 'turtle' with 'detonator,' directly referencing both its reptilian basis and its explosive nature.
