As a pseudo-legendary Pokémon native to the Hoenn region, it is prized for its rarity and strength, and a Shiny Metagross is famously the signature Pokémon of Hoenn Champion Steven Stone.

The Japanese name メタグロス (Metagurosu) is identical in construction to the English 'Metagross,' combining 'meta-' (a prefix suggesting something beyond or transformed, and also echoing 'metal,' fitting its Steel typing) with 'gross,' which derives from the German 'groß' meaning 'large' or 'great,' and possibly the English word 'gross' as in a quantity of 144, hinting at its massive computational power.
