History

Metagross is a Steel/Psychic-type Pokémon formed when two Metang fuse together, resulting in a creature with four brains linked into a single network that rivals a supercomputer in processing power. Its hulking, metallic body walks on four sturdy legs, earning it the 'Iron Leg Pokémon' classification, and it can pin prey beneath its bulk while analyzing it with cold precision. As a pseudo-legendary Pokémon native to the Hoenn region, it is prized for its rarity and strength, and a Shiny Metagross is famously the signature Pokémon of Hoenn Champion Steven Stone.

Name & meaning

The Japanese name メタグロス (Metagurosu) is identical in construction to the English 'Metagross,' combining 'meta-' (a prefix suggesting something beyond or transformed, and also echoing 'metal,' fitting its Steel typing) with 'gross,' which derives from the German 'groß' meaning 'large' or 'great,' and possibly the English word 'gross' as in a quantity of 144, hinting at its massive computational power. The name builds on its pre-evolutions Beldum (メタング's family) and Metang (メタング), all sharing the 'Meta' root. The English name is a direct romanization of the Japanese, with no significant change.
