History

Scatterbug is a Bug-type Pokémon introduced in Generation VI, the first stage of an evolutionary line leading to Spewpa and then Vivillon. As a small caterpillar-like Pokémon, it defends itself by ejecting a black powder that can paralyze attackers, and the powder coating its body helps it regulate temperature so it can thrive in nearly any environment. It is notable as the early form of Vivillon, whose wing patterns vary by the real-world geographic region in which the Pokémon is encountered.

Name & meaning

The Japanese name コフキムシ (Kofukimushi) breaks down into 粉吹き (kofuki), meaning 'powder-covered' or 'dusted with powder' (粉 'ko/kona' = powder, 吹き 'fuki' = blowing/dusting), and 虫 (mushi) = 'bug/insect,' so it roughly means 'powder-dusted bug.' This fits its Scatterdust category and the protective powder it produces. The English name 'Scatterbug' combines 'scatter' (referring to the powder it scatters when threatened) with 'bug,' mirroring the Japanese meaning.
