“This Pokémon scatters poisonous powder to repel enemies. It will eat different plants depending on where it lives.”
This is a Common Basic Pokémon card of Scatterbug (#8) from the English-language Scarlet & Violet base set. As a basic Common, it is a standard early-evolution card with no special rarity treatment, depicting the small Bug-type larva Pokémon that eventually evolves into Spewpa and then Vivillon.
Scatterbug is a Bug-type Pokémon introduced in Generation VI, the first stage of an evolutionary line leading to Spewpa and then Vivillon. As a small caterpillar-like Pokémon, it defends itself by ejecting a black powder that can paralyze attackers, and the powder coating its body helps it regulate temperature so it can thrive in nearly any environment. It is notable as the early form of Vivillon, whose wing patterns vary by the real-world geographic region in which the Pokémon is encountered.
The Japanese name コフキムシ (Kofukimushi) breaks down into 粉吹き (kofuki), meaning 'powder-covered' or 'dusted with powder' (粉 'ko/kona' = powder, 吹き 'fuki' = blowing/dusting), and 虫 (mushi) = 'bug/insect,' so it roughly means 'powder-dusted bug.' This fits its Scatterdust category and the protective powder it produces. The English name 'Scatterbug' combines 'scatter' (referring to the powder it scatters when threatened) with 'bug,' mirroring the Japanese meaning.
