“Possesses cheek sacs in which it stores electricity. This clever forest-dweller roasts tough berries with an electric shock before consuming them.”
Pikachu is the Mouse Pokémon, an Electric-type known for storing electricity in the cheek sacs on either side of its face and releasing it through electric shocks. It is the evolved form of Pichu and evolves into Raichu when exposed to a Thunder Stone. As the franchise's iconic mascot and Ash Ketchum's signature partner in the anime, Pikachu is famous for its cheerful, loyal nature, its 'Thunderbolt' attack, and its reluctance in some portrayals to evolve, preferring to grow stronger in its base form.
The Japanese name ピカチュウ (Pikachu) combines two Japanese onomatopoeic words: 'pika' (ピカ), which mimics the sound or flash of sparkling electricity (as in 'pika-pika,' meaning to glitter or sparkle), and 'chu' (チュウ), the sound a mouse makes in Japanese (equivalent to 'squeak'). Together the name evokes a sparking, squeaking mouse. The English name was retained directly from the Japanese, preserving the same onomatopoeic blend.
