History

Pikachu is the Mouse Pokémon, an Electric-type famous for the red cheek sacs in which it stores electricity, releasing charges when threatened or excited. Known for being intelligent and resourceful, it lives in forests and is said to roast hard berries with an electric jolt before eating them. As the franchise's mascot and Ash Ketchum's signature partner in the anime, Pikachu has become the most recognizable Pokémon worldwide; it evolves from Pichu and into Raichu via a Thunder Stone.

Name & meaning

The Japanese name ピカチュウ (Pikachu) is a compound of two onomatopoeic words: ピカ (pika), which evokes the sound or sparkle of electricity (as in 'pika-pika,' meaning to glitter or flash), and チュウ (chuu), the Japanese onomatopoeia for a mouse's squeak. Together the name suggests a sparkling, electric mouse, fitting its design and abilities. The English name 'Pikachu' was retained directly from the Japanese, as the playful sound was considered universally appealing.
