History

Luxray is an Electric-type Pokémon introduced in Generation IV (the Sinnoh region), the final evolution of Shinx and Luxio. Known as the Gleam Eyes Pokémon, it has a regal lion-like appearance and is said to be able to see through walls, objects, and even living bodies when its eyes shine gold, making it skilled at locating prey and lost or hidden things. In the wild it lives in prides, with packs led by a single dominant male, reflecting its lion-inspired social structure.

Name & meaning

The Japanese name レントラー (Rentorā) is generally understood to combine elements suggesting an X-ray-like vision (from レントゲン, 'rentogen,' the Japanese word for X-ray/Röntgen) with 'tiger' (トラ, 'tora'), fitting its lion/feline design and its legendary ability to see through anything. The English name 'Luxray' blends 'lux' (Latin for 'light,' also evoking 'luxury') with 'ray' (as in light ray or X-ray), capturing both its electric nature and its piercing, see-through gaze. Both names emphasize the theme of penetrating vision combined with a big-cat motif.
