The Japanese name カバルドン (Kabarudon) combines カバ (kaba), meaning 'hippopotamus,' with what is likely a play on サンドン/sand-related sounds or simply an evocative '-rudon' ending that mimics hippo-like heaviness and a guttural roar. The English name 'Hippowdon' fuses 'hippopotamus' with 'powder' (referencing the sand it carries) and a 'don' suffix often used for large, beastly Pokémon, evoking massiveness much like dinosaur names ending in '-don.'
