Patrat is the Scout Pokémon, a small rodent introduced in Generation V (Unova). Extremely cautious by nature, these Pokémon work in groups where at least one member always keeps watch for danger, using their large, alert eyes; they store food in cheek pouches so they can stand guard for long periods without leaving their post. Despite their vigilance, they have a blind spot and can be surprised by foes approaching from behind. Patrat evolves into Watchog, continuing its role as a guardian and sentry.
The Japanese name ミネズミ (Minezumi) combines 見 (mi, 'to see/watch/look out') with ネズミ (nezumi, 'mouse/rat'), giving a sense of a 'lookout mouse' or 'watching rodent,' fitting its sentinel behavior. The English name 'Patrat' blends 'patrol' (reflecting its vigilant guard duty) with 'rat,' emphasizing its rodent nature. Both names highlight the species' role as a watchful, observant creature.
