Gastly is a Ghost/Poison-type Pokémon classified as the Gas Pokémon, and is the first stage in the line that evolves into Haunter and then Gengar. Its body is composed largely of poisonous gases, making it nearly insubstantial and able to slip through walls and other barriers. It is said to be dangerous because inhaling part of its toxic body can incapacitate a person, and it is often found lurking in dark, eerie places. Despite its frightening reputation, its gaseous form can be dispersed by strong winds.

The Japanese name ゴース (Gōsu) is a katakana rendering of the English word 'ghost,' fitting for a spectral, gaseous Pokémon. Some interpretations also connect it to 'gas,' reflecting its vaporous body. The English name 'Gastly' is a play on the words 'ghastly' (meaning frightful or horrifying) and 'gas,' combining its ghostly nature with its gaseous composition.
