“According to old tales, these Pokémon are stumps possessed by the spirits of children who died while lost in the forest.”
Phantump is a dual Ghost/Grass-type Pokémon introduced in Generation VI (Pokémon X and Y), depicted as a small, hollow tree stump inhabited by a wandering spirit. According to lore, it is the spirit of a child who became lost and died in the forest, now possessing an old stump; it mimics a child's voice to lure people deep into the woods. Despite this eerie behavior, it is said that those who befriend it can be guided safely out of the forest, and it evolves into the larger Trevenant.
The Japanese name ボクレー (Bokurē) combines 木 (boku, an on'yomi reading meaning 'tree' or 'wood'), often associated with the word 朽ちる (kuchiru, 'to rot/decay') or 株 (kabu, 'stump'), with レー evoking a ghostly, spectral sound (suggestive of a wail or the English 'wraith'). The English name 'Phantump' is a portmanteau of 'phantom' (reflecting its Ghost typing and ghostly nature) and 'stump' (referencing its tree-stump body and its Stump Pokémon category).
