It famously switches between a defensive Shield Forme and an offensive Blade Forme depending on whether it is attacking or guarding, embodying the balance of sword and shield.

The Japanese name ギルガルド (Girugarudo) is generally understood to combine elements evoking 'guild' or a regal/knightly sound with 'guard,' fitting its role as a royal sentinel and protector. The English name 'Aegislash' merges 'aegis' (the protective shield associated with Greek mythology, here reflecting its shield form) with 'slash' (referencing its sword form).
