History

Fletchinder is a Fire/Flying-type bird Pokémon introduced in Generation VI (Kalos region), evolving from Fletchling and into Talonflame. Known as the Ember Pokémon, it has gained a fiery sac that lets it raise its body temperature and launch glowing embers from its beak to flush out prey. As the flavor text notes, Fletchinder are intensely territorial and aggressive, frequently clashing with one another over prized feeding grounds, marking a sharp shift from the gentle, friendly disposition of the Fletchling it evolves from.

Name & meaning

The Japanese name ヒノヤコマ (Hinoyakoma) combines 火の (hi no, 'of fire') with 矢 (ya, 'arrow') and 小馬 or 駒 (koma, evoking a swift bird, and shared with its pre-evolution ヤヤコマ/Yayakoma); the 'arrow' element reflects the dart-like flight of these fire-birds. The English name 'Fletchinder' blends 'fletching' (the feathers attached to an arrow's shaft) with 'cinder' or 'tinder,' reflecting both its arrow-bird theme and its newly acquired Fire typing. It is the middle evolution in the line, building on the arrow-and-feather motif of its pre-evolution Fletchling.
