“The quills on its head are usually soft. When it flexes them, the points become so hard and sharp that they can pierce rock.”
Chespin is the Grass-type starter Pokémon of the Kalos region, introduced in Pokémon X and Y, and the Spiny Nut Pokémon. It is protected by a tough shell of woody material covering its head and back, which is hard enough to shrug off powerful impacts, and it can flex the soft spines atop its head into sharp points for defense. Cheerful and a bit mischievous by nature, Chespin evolves into Quilladin and then the armored, archer-like Chesnaught.
The Japanese name ハリマロン (Harimaron) combines 針 (hari, meaning 'needle' or 'spine') with マロン (maron), the loanword for 'marron,' the French/English term for chestnut. Together it evokes a spiny chestnut, fitting its prickly, nut-shelled design. The English name 'Chespin' similarly blends 'chestnut' with 'pin' (or 'spine'), preserving the same nutty, spiky imagery.
