History

Shaymin is a Mythical Grass-type Pokémon known as the Gratitude Pokémon, associated with thankfulness and the renewal of nature after winter. In its Land Forme it resembles a small, hedgehog-like creature covered in greenery, but using the Gracidea flower it can transform into a sleek, deer-like Sky Forme that gains the Flying type. It can purify polluted or withered land and cause flowers to bloom wherever it goes, and a swarm of Shaymin can dissolve toxins in the air, embodying themes of healing and renewal.

Name & meaning

The Japanese name シェイミ (Shaymi) and the English name Shaymin both derive from the English word 'shame' (as in 'shamrock') or more directly from words connected to plants and gratitude. The most commonly cited derivation is from 'shamrock' (a clover-like plant) combined with a diminutive sound, reflecting its floral, grass-covered nature. The English spelling adds a final 'n' to the Japanese シェイミ, producing 'Shaymin' while keeping the same core sound.
