History

Emolga is an Electric/Flying-type Pokémon introduced in Generation V (Pokémon Black and White), known as the Sky Squirrel Pokémon. It glides through the air using membranes between its limbs, similar to a real flying squirrel, while its body stores and discharges electricity. As reflected in its flavor text, Emolga is fond of sweet berries and can overstuff its cheeks, and it is generally portrayed as a small, energetic, and mischievous creature in both the games and the anime.

Name & meaning

The Japanese name エモンガ (Emonga) is generally understood to combine elements such as 'emu' (a reference to flying squirrels or gliding) with 'momonga' (モモンガ), the Japanese word for the Japanese dwarf flying squirrel. The English name 'Emolga' preserves the 'Emo-' opening of the Japanese name and adapts the rest, likely echoing the gliding-squirrel root found in 'momonga.' Both names point clearly to a flying-squirrel inspiration.
