Seel

Seel is the Sea Lion Pokémon, a white-furred aquatic creature that thrives in icy waters and enjoys swimming in extremely cold temperatures. It uses a prominent horn-like protrusion on its head to break through ice from below, allowing it to surface and breathe in frozen seas. Gentle and well-adapted to harsh polar climates, Seel evolves into Dewgong, gaining an even more elegant, dugong-like form suited to frigid oceans.

The Japanese name パウワウ (Pawou) is an onomatopoeic, baby-talk style name evoking the bark or cry of a sea lion, and it may also echo English words like 'paw' along with the playful repetition typical of cute animal sounds. The English name 'Seel' is a respelling of 'seal,' the marine mammal it resembles, with the altered spelling giving it a distinct trademarkable form. Both names point directly to its identity as a cold-water pinniped.
