“Wimpod gather in swarms, constantly on the lookout for danger. They scatter the moment they detect an enemy's presence.”
Wimpod is a small, skittish Bug/Water-type Pokémon resembling an aquatic isopod or pill bug, introduced in Generation VII (Pokémon Sun and Moon) in the Alola region. Extremely cowardly, it lives in swarms that stay constantly alert and scatter at the first hint of danger, making it notoriously hard to catch. Despite its timidity, it serves a useful role as a scavenger, eating leftover scraps and rotting matter, which keeps its surroundings clean. It evolves into the formidable and aggressive Golisopod, a striking contrast to its fearful early stage.
The Japanese name コソクムシ (Kosokumushi) combines コソク, likely from 姑息 (kosoku, meaning 'cowardly,' 'underhanded,' or 'temporary/stopgap'), with 虫 (mushi, 'bug' or 'insect'), aptly describing a timid little bug. It may also evoke 高速 (kōsoku, 'high speed'), nodding to how quickly it flees. The English name 'Wimpod' fuses 'wimp' (a weak, cowardly person) with 'pod,' referencing both its isopod-like body and the swarms it forms.
