History

Starmie is a Water/Psychic-type Pokémon resembling a starfish, evolved from Staryu via a Water Stone, and is known as the Mysterious Pokémon for the glowing, gem-like core at its center that flickers in seven colors. It propels itself through the ocean by spinning rapidly and feeds on plankton as it moves, while its core is said to emit radio-like signals that have fueled speculation about its origins. In the games it is a fast Special Attacker, and in the anime it is famously the signature Pokémon of Cerulean City Gym Leader Misty.

Name & meaning

The Japanese name スターミー (Sutāmī) combines the English loanword 'star' (スター, sutā) with a suffix '-mī' (ミー) that echoes its pre-evolution Hitodeman/Staryu and may evoke 'me' or simply a phonetic flourish; the 'star' element reflects its star-shaped body. The English name 'Starmie' likewise blends 'star' with a soft '-mie' ending, pairing it with its pre-evolution Staryu to form a matched naming set based on starfish.
