History

Spewpa is the Cocoon-stage evolution of Scatterbug and the pre-evolution of Vivillon, introduced in Generation VI (Kalos region). True to its Scatterdust Pokémon category, it has an extremely hard, stalwart body that even the sharp beaks of bird Pokémon cannot pierce, and it defends itself by spewing irritating powder when threatened. As a largely immobile cocoon, it bides its time gathering energy until it is ready to evolve into the winged Vivillon, whose wing patterns vary by the region in which it grows.

Name & meaning

The Japanese name コフーライ (Kofūrai) breaks down as コ (ko), a diminutive prefix meaning 'small' or 'child,' combined with elements echoing フ (fu, suggesting fuwa/fuwafuwa 'fluffy' or perhaps fūrai-bō, a wandering vagrant) and possibly 蛾 (ga, moth) influences seen in its evolutionary line; it evokes a small, fluffy cocoon-like creature. The English name 'Spewpa' is a portmanteau of 'spew' (referring to its defensive powder it ejects) and 'pupa,' the Latin term for the immobile cocoon stage of an insect's metamorphosis. Both names emphasize its small, protective cocoon nature.
