History

Xerneas is the Life Pokémon and a Legendary Fairy-type, serving as the mascot of Pokémon X. It takes the form of a majestic deer or stag with rainbow-colored antlers, and is said to be able to share eternal life; legend holds it can sleep for a thousand years in the form of a tree when its life nears its end. As the counterpart to Yveltal (the Pokémon of destruction), Xerneas represents life and renewal, and is central to the Kalos region's mythology surrounding life and death.

Name & meaning

The Japanese name ゼルネアス (Zeruneasu) is essentially a transliteration of the English 'Xerneas' and does not break down into Japanese words; the kana simply approximate the foreign sounds. The name is widely thought to derive from the Cernunnos, a horned deity of Celtic mythology, possibly combined with 'X' (matching its game pairing X) and a stylized rendering evoking a stag. The horned, antlered design and association with life reflect this mythological stag-god inspiration.
