History

Vulpix is the Fox Pokémon, a Fire-type known for the bundle of six elegant, curled tails it develops as it matures, having started life with just a single white tail. A flame burns within its body, allowing it to expel fireballs and keep its internal temperature manageable by venting heat through its tails. It is often depicted as a graceful, somewhat warm-natured creature, and it evolves into Ninetales when exposed to a Fire Stone. A later Alolan regional form reimagines Vulpix as an Ice-type adapted to snowy mountains.

Name & meaning

The Japanese name ロコン (Rokon) breaks down into 六 (roku, meaning 'six') and 紺 (kon, a deep blue-purple color) or 'kon,' an onomatopoeic sound associated with a fox's yip; the 'six' clearly references its six tails. The English name 'Vulpix' is a portmanteau of the Latin 'vulpes' (meaning 'fox') and 'six,' again pointing to its six tails. Both names emphasize the fox motif and the number six.
