“The shell covering its body is as hard as diamond. This Pokémon will do anything it takes to win.”
Golisopod is a Bug/Water-type introduced in Generation VII (Alola), evolving from Wimpod, and is based on the giant isopod, a deep-sea crustacean. Despite its imposing, samurai-like armored appearance and powerful claws, it inherits Wimpod's cowardly streak through its signature Emergency Exit ability, which causes it to flee or switch out when threatened. It dwells in sunken ships and seabed holes, and is portrayed as a fearsome predator that battles other deep-sea Pokemon such as Grapploct.
The Japanese name グソクムシャ (Gusokumusha) combines 具足 (gusoku), referring to a full suit of Japanese armor, with 具足虫 (gusokumushi), the Japanese word for the giant isopod, and 武者 (musha), meaning warrior. Thus the name evokes an armored isopod warrior. The English name 'Golisopod' likely blends 'goliath' (suggesting great size/strength) with 'isopod', the crustacean order to which giant isopods belong.
