Until the end of your next turn, if an attack damages the Defending Pokémon (after applying Weakness and Resistance), that attack does 20 more damage to the Defending Pokémon.

If this attack damages the Defending Pokémon, the Defending Pokémon is now Poisoned and you remove a number of damage counters from Golbat equal to half that damage (rounded up to the nearest 10). If Golbat has fewer damage counters than that, remove all of them. Either way, the Defending Pokémon is now Poisoned.

History

Golbat is the Bat Pokémon and the evolved form of Zubat, known for its enormous gaping mouth lined with sharp fangs. It feeds on the blood of other living creatures, latching on with its hollow, straw-like teeth and drinking until it can sometimes barely fly. Active mainly at night, it relies on echolocation rather than keen eyesight, and with strong friendship it can further evolve into Crobat.

Name & meaning

The Japanese name ゴルバット (Gorubatto) is generally understood to combine an element suggesting 'gulp' or a guttural/gobbling sound with 'bat' (バット, from the English word 'bat'). The English name 'Golbat' retains this structure, blending 'gulp' (or 'gobble') with 'bat' to evoke a blood-slurping flying mammal. Both names emphasize the creature's voracious, gulping feeding habits combined with its identity as a bat.
