“The tail's tip shines brightly and can be seen from far away. It acts as a beacon for lost people.”
Ampharos is the Electric-type final evolution of Mareep, evolving from Flaaffy, and is known as the Light Pokémon. The bright glow emitted from the tip of its tail is so powerful it can be seen from space, and historically it has served as a guiding beacon for sailors navigating at night. Gentle in nature, it embodies the lighthouse motif, and in the Johto region it is famously associated with the Olivine City lighthouse, where one named Amphy provides light for ships.
The Japanese name デンリュウ (Denryū) combines 電流 (denryū), meaning 'electric current,' with possible nods to 電気 (denki, 'electricity') and 竜/龍 (ryū, 'dragon'), reflecting its electric typing and long-necked, dragon-like silhouette. The English name 'Ampharos' is derived from 'ampere' (the unit of electric current) blended with 'pharos,' the Greek word for lighthouse (after the famous Lighthouse of Alexandria), tying directly to its luminous beacon tail.
