History

Espurr is a small, gray Psychic-type cat Pokémon known as the Restraint Pokémon, introduced in Generation VI (Kalos region). Despite its deadpan, wide-eyed expression, it harbors immense psychic power said to be strong enough to blast a foe up to 300 feet away, and it must constantly hold this energy in check using the organs in its ears, which is why it folds them down. This struggle to control its own power is a defining trait of the species. Espurr evolves into Meowstic, which notably has distinct male and female forms with different appearances and abilities.

Name & meaning

The Japanese name ニャスパー (Nyasupā) combines ニャー (nyā), the Japanese onomatopoeia for a cat's meow, with エスパー (esupā), the Japanese rendering of 'ESPer,' referring to a person with extrasensory/psychic powers. This neatly reflects that Espurr is a psychic-type feline. The English name 'Espurr' likewise blends 'ESP' (extrasensory perception) with 'purr,' the contented sound made by a cat.
