History

Honedge is the Sword Pokémon, a Steel/Ghost-type introduced in Generation VI (Pokémon X and Y) as the first stage in the line leading to Doublade and Aegislash. It is the ghostly spirit of a sword said to have possessed an ancient blade, with the blue eye on its handguard being its true body and a tattered length of old cloth attached to its pommel. According to lore, anyone who carelessly grips Honedge by the handle will find their life force drained away through the cloth, marking it as a dangerous and eerie creature to handle.

Name & meaning

The Japanese name ヒトツキ (Hitotsuki) combines 一 (hito, meaning 'one') with 突き (tsuki, meaning 'thrust' or 'stab,' from the verb 突く tsuku) and also evokes 憑き (tsuki, 'possession' by a spirit), reflecting both its single-blade form and its haunting nature. The English name 'Honedge' is a blend of 'hone' (to sharpen a blade) and 'edge' (the cutting edge of a sword), referencing its identity as a sentient sword.
