History

Ho-Oh is a Legendary Fire/Flying-type known as the Rainbow Pokémon, said to live at the foot of a rainbow and to fly across the world's skies. Its iridescent feathers shine in seven colors depending on the light and are believed to bring happiness to whoever holds one. In Generation II lore it is the guardian counterpart to Lugia and is associated with the Tin Tower in Ecruteak City, and it is said to have resurrected the three legendary beasts (Entei, Raikou, and Suicune) after a fire.

Name & meaning

The Japanese name ホウオウ (Hōō) comes from 鳳凰 (hōō), the Japanese term for the Chinese mythological phoenix (the fenghuang), composed of 鳳 (hō, the male phoenix) and 凰 (ō, the female phoenix). The English name 'Ho-Oh' is a near-direct romanization of this Japanese name, preserving its two syllables with a hyphen. Both names tie the Pokemon to East Asian phoenix mythology, fitting its rainbow and rebirth themes.
