History

Mareep is the Wool Pokémon, a Generation II Electric-type resembling a young sheep with a soft, fluffy fleece and a glowing orb on the tip of its tail. Rubbing its wool generates static electricity, which is stored in its body and causes the orb on its tail to shine brighter as more charge accumulates; touching its coat with a bare hand can result in a painful shock. It later evolves into Flaaffy and then the more powerful Ampharos, with its wool growing and changing across these stages.

Name & meaning

The Japanese name メリープ (Merīpu) is generally understood to blend the onomatopoeic 'meri/meree' associated with a sheep's bleat (and possibly echoing the English 'merry') with 'sheep,' fitting its woolly, ovine design. The English name 'Mareep' is likely derived from a rearrangement or play on 'sheep' combined with elements evoking 'mare' and the original Japanese, while also subtly hinting at the static-electric quality of its fleece. Both names center on its identity as a fluffy, sheep-like creature.
