History

Zubat is the Bat Pokémon, a poison/flying-type that swarms in dark, gloomy caves and is famously encountered in great numbers by traveling Trainers. Its eyes have atrophied to the point of blindness, so it navigates and detects prey using ultrasonic waves emitted from its mouth, much like real-world echolocation in bats. Largely nocturnal and sensitive to sunlight, it sleeps clinging to cave ceilings during the day and evolves into Golbat, and later Crobat once it forms a strong bond with its Trainer.

Name & meaning

The Japanese name ズバット (Zubatto) is the same as the English 'Zubat,' formed by combining the onomatopoeic Japanese word 'zubatto' (ズバッと), meaning to do something swiftly or with a sharp, slicing motion, with the English word 'bat.' The English name retains the Japanese spelling directly, keeping the pun on 'bat' while evoking the quick, darting flight of the creature. The 'zu-' element also subtly echoes the rushing 'whoosh' sound associated with its rapid, swooping movements.
