History

Tropius is a Grass/Flying-type 'Fruit Pokémon' introduced in Generation III, resembling a sauropod-like dinosaur with broad leaf-like wings and a cluster of banana-shaped fruit growing around its neck. The fruit grows year-round in tropical regions and is said to taste sweet; it is a favorite snack for children, and the fruit regrows after being eaten. Because of this, Tropius is commonly raised on ranches in warm areas, where its fruit can be harvested as food.

Name & meaning

The Japanese name トロピウス (Toropiusu) is essentially identical to the English 'Tropius,' both derived from the English word 'tropical' (or 'tropics'), reflecting its association with warm, tropical climates. The ending '-us' gives it a Latin-style flavor and may also evoke 'us' as in something grand or dinosaur-like. There is no kanji, as the name is written in katakana, the script typically used for foreign-derived or invented words.
