History

Watchog is the Lookout Pokémon, the evolved form of Patrat, and is based on a meerkat or prairie dog that stands upright on its hind legs to survey its surroundings. Its eyes and the patterns on its body can glow to illuminate dark areas or to startle and intimidate intruders, making it an excellent sentinel. When it spots an enemy, its tail stands erect and it spits berry seeds stored in its cheek pouches as a defensive measure, reflecting its alert and cautious nature.

Name & meaning

The Japanese name ミルホッグ (Miruhoggu) combines 見る (miru, 'to see/watch/look') with 'hog,' referencing both its vigilant lookout behavior and its prairie dog/groundhog inspiration. The romaji is typically rendered 'Miruhoggu.' The English name 'Watchog' similarly fuses 'watch' (keeping guard) with 'hog' (groundhog/prairie dog), preserving the original's pun on watchfulness and the burrowing rodent it resembles.
