History

Cobalion is a Legendary Steel/Fighting-type Pokémon of the Unova region and the leader of the trio of Swords of Justice, alongside Terrakion and Virizion (with Keldeo as their apprentice). It is said to radiate the aura of a leader from birth and can calm even violent foes with its commanding presence. In lore, the Swords of Justice once protected Pokémon from the ravages of war between humans, and Cobalion in particular is known for sternly disciplining people who mistreat Pokémon. Its calm, principled nature reflects its 'Iron Will' category.

Name & meaning

The Japanese name コバルオン (Kobaruon) combines コバルト (kobaruto, 'cobalt'—the blue metal) with the suffix オン (on), shared among its fellow musketeer Pokémon and evoking 'lion' as well as a sense of nobility. The English name 'Cobalion' similarly merges 'cobalt' with 'lion,' referencing both its steel-blue coloration and its leonine, leaderly bearing. Both names tie its Steel typing and dignified character to the cobalt metal.
